Kerry Ellis in Wicked
She’s spellbinding audiences as green-tinted schoolgirl sorceress Elphaba in the West End’s smash hit musical, Wicked, but when it comes to the wider world of musical theatre, Kerry Ellis is anything but green. At just 21 years of age, Suffolk-born Ellis got her break understudying Martine McCutcheon’s Eliza in the Lyttleton’s 2001 production of My Fair Lady. Illness forced McCutcheon to miss many performances, so Ellis stepped in and was an instant popular and critical hit. The producers of We Will Rock You were watching, and went ga-ga for the diminutive powerhouse, too. For two years from 2002, Kerry played the part of Meat in the Queen mega-musical to yet more rhapsodic acclaim. After that, there was no rest for the Wicked star, who went straight into the touring production of Miss Saigon, excelling as Ellen through 2004 and 2005. The tireless Miss Ellis remained in Miss Saigon while rehearsing for Fantine in Les Miserables, a role she had wanted to play since childhood, and which she did with aplomb at the Queen’s Theatre from 2005 until last year. And then, Wicked. It was always understood that Ellis would take up Elphaba’s broomstick from American star Idina Menzel, who had brought her Tony Award-winning Broadway-originated performance to London. After standing by for Menzel for three months, that’s just what Ellis did, and now gifts the role with her unique presence, to the delight of consistently packed houses. Now you can find out yourself what lies beneath that verdant visage. This star has answered your questions!

From Micaela: I was wondering how does it feel to be the first British Elphaba? How do you feel about the character—what's your take on her?
Kerry responds: Well, it’s a joy and honour to be the first British Elphaba. I love playing the role and enjoy the challenges it brings.

From Alex: Hi Kerry! I was wondering, what was your audition like for Elphaba? How many did you have? What song did you sing? Oh, and you look beautiful in green!
Kerry responds: Thank you very much! I did around seven auditions for the part. I sang songs from the show and read some scenes, too. It was very exciting and extremely demanding.

From Samantha Mallison: What is it about working in the theatre that keeps you working in this industry?
Kerry responds: I love it and couldn’t do anything else, I think as actors we are very lucky to do what we do, and it’s great to work in such a creative atmosphere day to day.

From Lyndsay Matthews: How have you tried to make the role of Elphaba your own?
Kerry responds: For a start, I’m English, which is an instant difference and a nice change for me as the last few shows I’ve done other accents, I try to play the role as honest and true as I can and just let it happen really.

From Louise Marris: Hey Kerry. What is the best piece of advice the phenomenal Idina Menzel has given you? Good luck to you!
Kerry responds: To take your time and ease into this immense role.

From Lucy: Hello Kerry! What's your favorite Wicked song and why?
Kerry responds: There are so many but I have two I love “No Good Deed” because it so powerful and strong, and I also love “I’m Not That Girl.” It’s a really important song to Elphaba—where you see her vulnerable and sensitive side.

From Jeffrey:
How does it feel to go up on stage every night in all your green glory?
Kerry responds: Its great fun, actually I forget I’m green most of the time. It’s the other cast members that are constantly reminded.

From John: Is it fun to defy gravity?
Kerry responds: Of course! Who wouldn’t love that?!

From Carl: Is your makeup different than what Idina wore? It looks greener!
Kerry responds: The green reacts differently on everyone’s skin. It kind of allows your natural tone to come through.

From Niall Kinsella: What roles would you like to play in the West End that you have not played already?
Kerry responds: I don’t know yet, I’m happy with this right now, though there is a new musical that has opened on Broadway called Spring Awakening that I love the music for. Who knows? We shall see!

From Courtney: How old were you when you first became interested in theatre? What sparked that interest? What advice would you give to someone who is trying to break into the world of theatre?
Kerry responds: I’ve always sung as a child and drove everyone in family mad. I knew it was what I wanted to do from when I can remember. I think my advice would be to follow your dreams and don’t give up!

From Graeme Marshall: Do you have any plans to record an album? Your voice is amazing!
Kerry responds: Thank you very much, I have been working on an album with Brian May for a few years now but it takes a while as I don’t get much time, but watch this space.

From Liam:
Out of the many iconic roles you've played, which has been the most challenging and why?
Kerry responds: Each has its own challenges whether vocally, emotionally, physically, etc. I’ve been really lucky to play such different roles which has been a joy and hope it continues.

From Etienne: Wicked has changed my life so much, and I am just a fan, how has Wicked changed your life?
Kerry responds: It takes up most of my life at the moment. When I’m not performing, I’m resting and getting ready for the next show! But I’m loving every minute!

From Natalie: After the green has come off, the stage door has long closed and happy fans are on their way home, what is the first thing you do when you get home?
Kerry responds: Collapse on my sofa! Hee hee.
