Bent, Martin Sherman's harrowing 1979 play about a gay man's discovery of the true meaning of love and self-acceptance, opened in a new production on 5 October. The revival, starring Alan Cumming and directed by Daniel Kramer, attracted some big names to the first-night performance at Trafalgar Studios. The audience was speechless upon hearing the playwright's curtain call announcement that Tom Bell, who starred in the original production opposite Ian McKellen, had died the night before.
