Sunset Boulevard is set to receive a West End revival. The Watermill Theatre production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical begins previews at the Comedy Theatre on December 15, directed by Craig Revel Horwood.
Based on film of the same name, Sunset Boulevard tells the story of former Hollywood icon Norma Desmond, who now lives a life of isolation with only her memories for company. When a struggling young screenwriter appears at her mansion, she demands a second chance in the limelight. The film, written by Billy Wilder, won the Academy Award in 1950.
Kathryn Evans and Ben Goddard will reprise their roles of Norma Desmond and Joe Gillis from the Watermill production. Dave Willets will join the cast as Desmond’s servant Max von Meyerling.
Sunset Boulevard was last seen in the West End in 1993 in a production starring Patti LuPone as Norma Desmond. This new, small-scale production, which enjoyed a sell-out run at the Watermill Theatre, will feature choreography by Horwood and musical arrangements by Sarah Travis.
