Gareth Gates is set to take over the title role in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, replacing original star Lee Mead. The entertainer begins performances on February 9, 2009, following Mead's departure on January 10. Featuring music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, the production is currently in its second year at the West End's Adelphi Theatre.
Gates is best known as the runner-up of the first season of the popular series Pop Idol. He went on to have four number one singles in the U.K., including "Unchained Melody," "Anyone of Us (Stupid Mistake)" and "Spirit in the Sky". In early 2008, Gates competed on ITV's Dancing on Ice and later appeared on its UK tour. He is set to star as Prince Charming in Cinderella at the Wimbledon Theatre prior to his making his West End debut in Joseph.
On his West End debut, Gates says: "I have a lot to thank Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat for as it is the reason I first started singing, after being chosen to play the lead in a school production when I was eight years old. Ever since then it's been a dream of mine to appear in a West End musical. I am really honored to be appearing at the Adelphi, stepping into that famous coat and really can't wait to get stuck in!"
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a colorful retelling of the biblical story about dreamboat Joseph, his uncanny abilities and his designer coat. The musical sings out to young and old alike with a score which is wall to wall hits, including "Close Every Door" and "Any Dream Will Do."
