Julie Atherton with Kate Monster
in Avenue Q
The West End production of Avenue Q, which had announced a final performance date of March 28, will not be closing after all. Instead, the musical, which is in its final weeks at the Noel Coward Theatre, will transfer to the Gielgud Theatre after a brief hiatus. Performances will begin at the Gielgud on June 1.

"When I first saw Avenue Q in New York over five years ago, I found it a very funny, fresh and clever look at the trials and tribulations of young people finding their way in life, with splendidly witty swipes at contemporary hang-ups," producer Cameron Mackintosh said in a statement. "So I was rather surprised when the show opened in 2006 that the British national critics mostly didn’t get it and predicted that it would only last three months. Three years later Q is going stronger than ever, so much so that ever since I announced the last six months at the Coward to allow Calendar Girls to be booked into the theater, business has surged to such an extent that I’m delighted to announce that Avenue Q is going to continue its run on the Avenue Shaftesbury that is at the start of June.  The puppets have put their hands up the cast and demanded a few weeks holiday so, while they enjoy that, Alan Bennett’s Enjoy will finish up its hugely successful extended run at the Gielgud Theatre."

Currently in the cast are Julie Atherton as Kate Monster, Daniel Boys as Princeton and Rod, Mark Goldthorp as Nicky and Trekkie Monster, Joanna Ampil as Christmas Eve, Edward Baruwa as Gary, Christopher Fry as Brian and Rachel Jerram as Mrs. T and others.  The cast is set to transfer with the production to the Gielgud.

Avenue Q features a score by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, a book by Jeff Whitty and direction by Jason Moore. Set in a neighborhood in New York City, Avenue Q tells the story of Princeton, a bright-eyed college graduate, has just moved into the neighborhood as he desperately tries to follow his dreams and discover his ever-elusive purpose in life. A tiny bank balance, the distraction of a busty blonde and a variety of weird and wonderful friends and neighbours lead Princeton on a hilarious story of self-discovery.

Following Avenue Q into the Noel Coward Theatre is new play Calendar Girls, which begins performances on April 4.
