 Roger Allam
|
Olivier Award winner Roger Allam is set to join the cast of the West End production of La Cage aux Folles. Allam, who will star as Albin, joins original cast member Philip Quast as Georges. Both begin performances at the Playhouse Theatre on May 4, replacing Graham Norton and Steven Pacey, respectively.
Allam won an Olivier Award for his performance as Captain Terri Dennis in Privates on Parade and was recently seen as Bernard in Boeing-Boeing. His other stage credits include Democracy, The Cherry Orchard, Albert Speer, Summerfolk and Money, for which he also won an Olivier. He is an Associate Artist at the Royal Shakespeare Company and has been seen in numerous plays there, including Hamlet, Julius Caesar, Twelfth Night and Macbeth.

Quast is a triple Olivier Award winner, having won best actor in a musical for Sunday in the Park with George (National Theatre), The Fix (Donmar Warehouse) and South Pacific (National Theatre). Other credits include A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Stuff Happens (National Theatre), The Secret Garden (RSC/Aldwych), Macbeth, The White Devil (RSC) and earlier this year, Evita (Adelphi).
Recently honored with the 2009 Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival, La Cage aux Folles features music and lyrics by Jerry Herman and a book by Harvey Fierstein. Based on a French play (and later film) by Jean Poiret of the same name (that was also the inspiration for the 1996 hit film The Birdcage), the musical tells the story of Albin and Georges, two middle-aged partners who run a drag nightclub in St. Tropez. Their outrageously resplendent peace turns to mayhem when their son announces that he is getting married—to the daughter of a local morals crusader.
Current stars Norton and Pacey will appear as Albin and Georges through May 2, 2009. They play alongside Stuart Neal as Jean-Michel, Jason Pennycooke as Jacob, Alicia Davies as Anne, Iain Mitchell as M. Dindon, Paula Wilcox as Mme. Dindon and Tracie Bennett as Jacqueline.
