Brian Conley is set to take over the role of Edna Turnblad in the West End production of Hairspray. The actor succeeds original cast member Michael Ball, who departs the production on July 25.

Conley is best known for starring on television in Brian Conley: This Way Up, The Brian Conley Show and Time After Time. On stage, he's starred in The Music Man at Chichester Festival Theatre, as Al Jolson in Jolson, as Caractacus Potts in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and the West End productions of Me and My Girl and Elton John's Glasses. His recording career includes albums Stage to Screen, Let the Good Times Roll and Brian Conley Sings.


The winner of the 2008 Olivier Award for Best Musical, Hairspray has a book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan, music by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman. The musical is based on the 1988 film, written and directed by John Waters. Along with Ball, the current cast includes Leanne Jones as Tracy, Ben James-Ellis as Link Larkin, Nigel Planer as Wilbur, Sandra Martin as Motormouth Maybelle, Adrian Hansel as Seaweed, Liz Robertson as Velma Von Tussle, Zoe Rainey as Amber Von Tussle and Verity Rushworth as Penny Pingleton. The show currently plays at the Shaftesbury Theatre.
