FIDDLER ON THE ROOF

FIDDLER ON THE ROOF

Fiddler on the Roof transfers to the West End after a sold-out run at Sheffield's Crucible Theatre.
Set in the Tsarist Russia of 1905, Fiddler on the Roof tells the tale of humble dairyman Tevye, an old-fashioned father who wants to see his daughters married in the traditional Jewish way. But as the atmosphere of revolution begins to eddy about them, the family is thrown into emotional turmoil as the former certainties of Tevye’s world are inexorably swept away.

Based on the stories of Sholem Aleicheim, this classic musical by Sheldon Harnick, Joseph Stein and Jerry Bock made its debut on Broadway in 1964. Blending drama with uplifting comedy and music, it won nine Tony Awards. Its hugely successful 1971 movie adaptation, starring Topol, netted three Oscars. Among its many musical highlights are the songs “Tradition,” “Matchmaker” and “If I Were a Rich Man.”
