Liam Mower—the child actor who created the title role in the musical Billy Elliot in March 2005 alongside George Maguire and James Lomas and was reviewed by the national critics—is set to take his final bow on 30 September. Maguire and Lomas have already left the show, but the three were reunited for one night only in May 2006 to share the role between them in a performance that marked the show’s first official birthday.
Mower, who is now 14 years old and has appeared in Billy Elliot for the last year and a half, is returning home to Hull to begin studying for his GCSE’s.
“Liam is a unique talent and we have all been blessed with the opportunity to see him flourish in Billy Elliot over the past eighteen months,” the show’s director, Stephen Daldry, said in a statement. “Rarely does one ever come across a performer with so many skills and talents, particularly when matched by Liam’s determination and good humour. He has been at the centre of Billy Elliot’s extended family for three and a half years now and his last performance will be an overwhelmingly emotional evening. As Liam hurtles towards adulthood we will be saying goodbye to one of the most celebrated child performers ever in the West End. An end of an era for us and the beginning of another huge adventure for Liam.”
Mower currently shares the role with Colin Bates, Leon Cooke, Matthew Koon and Travis Yates. The current West End cast also includes Sally Dexter, Philip Whitchurch, Chris Lennon, Ann Emery, Sara Pyzer, Paul Broughton, Alex Delamere and Isaac James.
The production is currently booking to 31 March 2007, but on 12 November, a further block of tickets will go on sale for a new booking period to 20 October 2007.
