Margaret Preece Takes Over Role of Mother Abbess in The Sound of Music

Margaret Preece will take over the role of Mother Abbess in The Sound of Music on 30 April. An original cast member of the production, Preece plays Sister Sophia and serves as an alternate to original star Lesley Garrett in the role of Mother Abbess since the show opened on 15 November.

Preece’s credits include playing leading roles with the English National Opera, Scottish Opera and Opera North, and she has frequently made appearances at opera houses throughout Europe. Her previous London stage work includes The Bacchae at the National Theatre and playing Carlotta in The Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty’s Theatre. She also appeared in the film version of The Phantom of the Opera and sang the role of Carlotta, which was dubbed for Minnie Driver.

In addition to Preece, the musical stars Connie Fisher as Maria for six performances a week, with Aoife Mulholland playing the role on Monday evenings and Wednesday matinees. Alexander Hanson continues to star as Captain Von Trapp.

The Sound of Music, directed by Jeremy Sams, is booking at the London Palladium until 29 May 2008.
