Veteran actor Warren Mitchell is to return to the stage in the autumn in Jeff Baron’s off-Broadway hit
Visiting Mr. Green. The actor
previously starred in the British premiere of the play at the West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds in 1999, and subsequently in Australia, where he co-starred with his son, Daniel Mitchell.
The new production will launch at the Mercury Theatre in Colchester from 12-22 September before embarking on a tour that will take it to Bradford’s Alhambra Theatre, the Oxford Playhouse, Coventry’s Belgrade Theatre, Lincoln’s Theatre Royal, Guildford’s Yvonne Arnaud, Peterborough’s Key Theatre and Brighton’s Theatre Royal, Nottingham’s Theatre Royal and Cardiff’s New Theatre, ending on December 8.
The play revolves around a Jewish widower, Mr. Green, who is almost hit by a speeding car driven by corporate executive Ross Gardiner. Found guilty of reckless driving, Ross is ordered to spend the next six months making weekly visits to Mr. Green. Two people who resent being in the same room with each other come to understand and tolerate their differences as family secrets are revealed and old wounds reopened.
Mitchell is best known for his TV role as Alf Garnett in
‘Til Death Us Do Part, for which he won the TV Actor of the Year Award in 1965. More recently, he won the 2004 Olivier Award for Best Performance in a Supporting Role for his West End appearance in Arthur Miller’s
The Price at the Apollo Theatre in 2003. Other stage roles include playing Willy Loman in
Death of a Salesman at the National Theatre in 1979, Davies in Pinter’s
The Caretaker at the National in 1980, starring in Pinter’s
The Homecoming at the Comedy in 1991, and appearing in the title role of
King Lear at Hackney Empire in 1995.
