 Simon Paisley Day & Josefina Gabrielle in The 39 Steps

Simon Paisley Day, Josefina Gabrielle and Martyn Ellis will join longstanding cast member Simon Gregor
in the Maria Aitken’s Olivier Award-winning production of
The 39 Steps from 22 October.
Day, who takes over as lead Richard Hannay, was Lord Evelyn Oakley in the National Theatre’s revival of Anything Goes that transferred to the West End’s Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. He also appeared in David Grindley’s production of The Philanthropist at the Donmar Warehouse. Film credits include Spartacus, Dr Who, The Queen of Sheba’s Pearls, Midsomer Murders, Hotel Babylon, The Heart of Me and Flawless.
Gabrielle, who will play the roles of Annabella Schmidt, Pamela and Margaret, starred as Laurie in the National’s production of Oklahoma!, subsequently reprising her performance when the show transferred to Broadway’s Gershwin Theatre. Her other credits include Coward’s Tonight at 8.30 for Chichester Festival Theatre, Singing in the Rain for Sadler’s Wells and several stints as Roxie Hart in the London production of Chicago at the Adelphi and Cambridge Theatres.
Ellis, who takes over the role of Clown 2, was most recently Nicely Nicely Johnson in Michael Grandage’s production Guys and Dolls at the Piccadilly Theatre. Other credits include Grand Hotel at the Donmar, Alice in Wonderland for the Royal Shakespeare Company, and the original Pumba in The Lion King. His screen credits include The Sarah Jane Adventures, Mine All Mine, Doctors, William & Mary and films In 2 Minds, A Christmas Carol and Agent Cody Banks 2.
Gregor, who has performed in the show since its first performance at the West Yorkshire Playhouse, the sold out run at the Tricycle and over a year in the West End, will continue playing Clown 1.
It has also been confirmed that the show’s Broadway transfer will begin performances at the American Airlines Theatre on 4 January and open on 10 January. Charles Edwards, who created the role of Richard Hannay in London, will reprise his performance there.
