Olivier Award-nominated performer Alistair McGowan will step into the role of the Emcee in the West End production of
Cabaret. He will replace Julian Clary in the role at the Lyric Theatre on April 21.
An actor and impressionist, McGowan is best known for his work on the popular BBC comedy, The Big Impression. As a stand-up comic he has performed on Tarbuck Late, Des O’Connor, Saturday Night Live, The Clive James Show and The Royal Variety Show. His stage credits include Goodbye America, The Pied Piper, Kafka’s Dick, Endgame, Art, The Government Inspector, 5/11, Merry Wives: The Musical and Little Shop of Horrors, the last of which earned him an Olivier Award nomination. He was most recently seen playing the title role in The Mikado at the Gielgud Theatre.
Set in the 1930s,
Cabaret turns Berlin into a divine haven of decadence, its morally ambiguous inhabitants determined to keep up appearances as the real world outside of their comfortable sanctuary prepares for war.
Cabaret currently stars Clary as the Emcee, Amy Nuttall as Sally Bowles, Steven Cree as Clifford Bradshaw, Angela Richards as Fraulein Schneider and Barry James as Herr Schultz. The musical features music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, a book by Joe Masteroff and direction by Rufus Norris.
