Liberty, the new Glyn Maxwell play at Shakespeare's Globe, will star Globe alumnus David Sturzaker (Titus Andronicus, The Comedy of Errors) in the central role of Evariste Gamelin, a revolutionary young artist whose idealism starts to turn, and West End favorite Belinda Lang taking the female lead, Louise. Directed by Guy Retallack, the production will begin previews on August 31 and open on September 3. The run will end on October 4 prior to a U.K. tour through November 15.
The play follows Che Walker's The Frontline as the second world premiere in the 2008 Globe season. Set during the Reign of Terror and based on a 1912 novel by Anatole France, Les Dieux ont Soif, the production will be designed by Ti Green with music by William Lyons. The full company consists of Kirsty Besterman, John Bett, Ellie Piercy, Edward Macliam, Jonty Stephens and Gregory Gudgeon.
The Shakespeare sequence so far this year at the Globe is King Lear, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Merry Wives of Windsor and, still to open, Timon of Athens. The season concludes on October 5.
